It's that time of year when we say... "Welcome to the holiday season... and my house". It's true - having family and friends over for the holidays is a blast, but once company leaves people often feel so exhausted from the stress and prep that has gone into making your home "guest ready" you almost can't enjoy it all. Some people need a vacation from their vacation when they host guests because of the amount of work that goes into making people feel welcome and going above and beyond. I'm not here to tell you that you won't be tired and that you won't have to put extra work into accommodating your guests, but there are a few things that can make it a little easier and less stressful.
Everyone preps to a different level. My mom is the type of person that will literally clean the house from top to bottom and spend hours mopping the floors and wiping base boards. I'm not that way - I'm more of a quick vacuum and light some candles type of person. There is definitely a balance, but using things to freshen the scent of your home is one way to cut back the level of extreme that goes into cleaning. Why? because when your house is full of people, it is dirty in about 10 minutes. With kids? About 2 minutes. Instead of thinking to yourself... "Nooo I just mopped that, do you have to play with your Christmas candy on the floor?" you can think.. "Yup - I knew that was coming. I will clean it after". It removes the disappointment mindset and instantly eliminates stress. We interviewed Liz, a planning guru and co-owner of Kitlife (a company that sells top notch planners of perfection) and she suggested the following: "Prepare fresh linens (a couple sets), stock up guest bathroom with toiletries and get your kitchen ready for another chef (declutter, organize, etc). This way, when your doorbell rings this season, you’re not running around in a panic." Here are our product suggestions to help you this season, and why they make things less stressful:
My last suggestion to you... if your guests are staying for days, don't be afraid to ask for help. You are a host, not a maid, and if your guests aren't offering to clean up their dishes or mess, then giving some words of direction may not be the worst thing in the world. "Hey guys, I'd like to watch 24 hours of A Christmas Story with you too - mind helping me get this done really quickly?". We all want things to run perfectly, but in reality, the people coming to your house are friends and family right? Don't allow your holidays to be spent cleaning up after other people and missing out on activities trying to provide the perfect home. Continue to find ways to eliminate stress, and possibly take a bath at the end of the day to help detox and reboot!
